Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration - Britain's Biggest Cause of Blindness

Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) blinds more people in Britain than anything else. Despite how common it is a lot of people are completely unaware of it.

Sometimes ARMD sufferers can be helped with laser surgery, although there is usually a high risk of the condition recurring.

The key to slowing the advance of ARMD is early detection. It's vital to take a regular eye examination, even if you don't think there is anything wrong with your sight.

Avoid ARMD

  1. TEST - Have an eye test at least every two years, more often as you approach later life. The earlier any abnormalities are detected the better.
  2. QUIT. Research shows that the risk of developing ARMD is higher smokers.
  3. CUT. It is thought that alcohol may be a factor in reducing the density of pigments that protect the macula. Cutting down could be beneficial.
  4. EAT healthy. Don't eat junk food, eat more fruit and vegetables for carotenoids and flavanoids vital eye nutrients.
  5. SUPPLEMENT. Dietary supplements complement your intake of nutrients, making it easier to get enough carotenoids and flavanoids.
